Whenever people asked me “how is business going?” I’d come up with a vague answer and change the subject right away.

I wasn’t proud of my business.

I knew my family, friends, and the few good employees I had all expected more from me.

And I was letting them down.

But for my luck, things started to change when I stumbled upon a powerful idea…

Darren Hardy once wrote a list of a hundred things he wanted in a perfect woman.

But he immediately realized that she was far too perfect for him. He wasn’t good enough for someone that incredible.

He then went back and wrote down a hundred things he had to become to attract that woman.

This was the moment when I realized that this is how business works.

You attract the employees you deserve.

I’m not going to lie… it was a hard pill to swallow.

But at that point I was committed to change, so I let my pride aside and asked myself this question:

“What my business has to become to attract the right people?”

The answer then magically appeared:

“I need to create a place where people can win. A place where my employees are set up for success.”

Everybody wants promotions, raises, bonuses, and recognition. We all want to feel like we are making moves in our careers and getting ahead.

And I wasn’t giving any of that to my team.

My business was entirely designed for me to win. No wonder my team didn’t care as much as I did.

But that was about to change.

I went to a chalkboard and started writing a list of 100 things the business needed to become to attract the right team. Stuff like:
  • Have clear processes that show them how to win in the field
  • Show them the exact path they can take to grow within the company
  • ​​Give them the opportunity to make more money based on their performance
  • Provide them with the best training and coaching to learn and grow faster
  • Create an environment where they feel like they’re treated as family
The list was big, and I didn’t implement it all at once.

But it took just a few weeks for the environment in the office to feel already different.

And over time these changes started to compound.

One event in particular made me realize how critical that new approach was to the growth of my business…
I Still Remember That Day. 
The 12th Of April 2020.
COVID had just hit.

My employees line up outside my office. And I’m freaking out: “Are they going to resign? Am I going to be left alone here?”

I’m sweating so much that my assistant can smell it from the other side of the room.

The first employee enters the room, avoiding eye contact.

He sits in front of me, tries to utter a few words and pauses to think for another second.

So I say: “Hey John, what’s going on?”

“Tommy, I know the situation with COVID isn’t easy. But I don’t want anyone to get fired. We’re a family here. If needed, I can cut part of my salary to help.”

Not gonna lie to you. That caught me off guard.

And John wasn’t alone. One by one, they all entered the office and offered to help the company.

That was the moment I had an epiphany:

“This is the #1 reason for my success. It’s why I’ve been doubling every year… I’ve built a company where everybody can win.”

My team was up for a big sacrifice because they knew that if we made it, there was an opportunity for them to win as well.

And I still remember the words from one of my technicians:

“Tommy, you’ve elevated the lives of everybody here. Last year I finally bought a house thanks to A1. And I have many other dreams to accomplish in the next few years. So I’ll do whatever it takes now to help us go through this turbulence.”

Since that episode, I made a promise to myself…
